Canada is seeking to stabilize its immigration levels at 500,000 per year in 2026, as the government introduced new immigration targets in the House of Commons on Wednesday.

Having increased immigration targets multiple times in recent years, the federal government announced its intent to sustain the goal of welcoming 500,000 new permanent residents in 2026. Immigration Minister Marc Miller explained that the target is designed to bolster the labor supply and alleviate pressures on housing and healthcare.

During a press conference, Miller highlighted the feedback from Canadians and economists, emphasizing the need to thoroughly examine the micro-economic impacts of immigration.

The government’s consistent elevation of immigration targets in recent years has been driven by the aim of enhancing the workforce and supporting an aging population.

Last year, the government unveiled a plan to grant permanent residency to 465,000 individuals in 2023, with the expectation of reaching 500,000 by 2025.

In contrast, the immigration target for 2015 was below 300,000. Miller mentioned that the government is now stabilizing its planned immigration intake to assess potential adjustments to Canada’s immigration programs.
